Control 2017

This week’s Word reminds us of our co-creative power. Inherent in this power is our personal and collective responsibility to act with CONTROL. When we practice restraint, moderation, and other variants of CONTROL in loving and soul-searching ways, we strengthen our willPower.

Be self-controlled, give, be compassionate.” ~The Upanishads

Our Seven Steps to willPower makes us more aware of the CONTROL we have in our own lives to steer ourselves in willPowerful ways:

1. Exercise CONTROL over your thoughts.

Conventionally, we hear “Control your emotions!” , but when we see that our emotions are simply a barometer of our thoughts, we understand that we must dig deeper to the level of thought with a sense of CONTROL. Consider your words before you utter them and reflect on the karma of your action. This doesn’t mean our decision-making suffers or we lose agility or spontaneity in our lives. The more in-tune with ourselves we become, the more effortless ease we experience in all area of our lives.

2. CONTROL your vibration.

When you’re feeling less than happy, recognize something is off. Get quiet and reflect. Perhaps, meditate to still the mind and uncover the answers. Meditation has a different “rest” effect than traditional sleep.

3. CONTROL your limiting beliefs.

These are beliefs that you are not something, not capable of something, not good at something…and they each speak to your notions of your self-worth, not your reality in any sense. You are what you think you are. Your emotion and action stems from there. This diagram helps us see how we create our lives through our thoughts:

Memory (thought / belief) –> desire (feeling / intention) –> karma (action) –> Memory (cycle repeats continuously)

4. CONTROL the station(s) you’re tuned into.

News, social media, pop culture, Facebook feed…fitness magazines! If it doesn’t feel good, by all means, switch the channel! There’s a reason they call it a remote “control” …not a remote “destiny”, remote “unlucky”, or remote “must see TV” !

5. CONTROL your schedule and time allocation.

Often in areas of work or family, we feel that our time is no longer our own or up to us. Within our activities, exercise as much CONTROL as you can. Notice where you are saying “yes” to take on something additional, when a better answer might be “no”. Practice CONTROL in one area of your life and see how you can expand it to others.

6. CONTROL your space.

This is a great week to declutter, spring-clean, shred old tax returns or anything figuratively or literally clogging your space!

7. CONTROL your daily decisions…even the seemingly mundane.

Our bodies are literally “made of food” (Annamaya Kosha) and the environment we “breathe” energetically. Your mind is feeding off the body and the “body” of your thoughts.

The physical body is composed of energy/matter and the environment—the five elements of nature. This realm includes the Annamaya Kosha. This literally translates to ‘the covering made of food.’ The majority of the cells in the body are derived from the food we eat. You may have heard, “You are what you eat.” Here we experience awareness of sensation. Imbalanced we may feel unhealthy, overweight, or sluggish. With a healthy, balanced diet, we can balance this layer. Our asana practices help to purify this layer.” ~“Explore the Layers of Life”, Live Yum Blog
