…Pandora curiously opened her treasure box, and out flew every evil known to man – all evils that exist… but one thing remained… Hope. The world lived in darkness, at the mercy of all the evils that she had set free. Evils could be seen and felt behind every tree, under every bush; they lurked inside every home.

Pandora wanted to make a change – she wished and dreamed and prayed. One day Pandora revisited the box, and slowly opened it, Hope quickly fluttered out, and rays of light spread amongst all of humanity. To the Greeks, Hope was as powerful as all the evils combined. Hope trumped all atrocities, bringing balance to otherwise unexplainable situations. They recognized the great gravity that rests in this word, after experiencing how dark life can be without the light of Hope.

You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty. Mohandas K. Gandhi

As you Hope, actively and consciously realize each step, so that you will experience what you dream of. The Greeks realized the danger of passive hope; which can sit stony, as an empty promise. Active desire distinguishes Hope from optimism.

If you lose hope, somehow you lose the vitality that keeps life moving, you lose that courage to be, that quality that helps you go on in spite of it all. And so today I still have a dream. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Philosophy In Action
