Here’s the situation: Finally, the weekend is here! The weather is perfect for a backyard party and everyone is excited to kick back and have some fun. The food hits the grill and the drinks start flowing.

Now: I’m fully aware that I’m scheduled for an 8-mile training run first thing in the morning, so I grab a bottle of water and start to guzzle.  “NO WAY” taunt my friends “Don’t you EVER loosen up!?”  (Flashback to high school peer pressure.  Is this really happening?) Well, I must admit, that the fancy adult summer drinks look a lot more interesting than my Poland Spring bottle.

Of course, my personality is strong enough to handle myself, but to make my situation a little bit simpler as the night progresses, I make a quick virgin drink – and put it in a fancy glass. My favorite low-calorie, electrolyte enhanced drink is G2 Natural.  Mixed with bubbly water and a sprig of mint, in a martini glass – and no one knew the difference.

Why electrolytes?  I have a “great cooling system” which means that I sweat a lot. (eeew?) It’s actually good to sweat a lot as long as the fluids are replaced. Electrolytes are what helps me to bounce back from my morning workout in the sun. (Sweat is more than water – sodium is lost as well – which is key in helping retain the fluid needed for a workout).

Sparkling mineral water offers the fun fizz: an interesting texture, to stimulate the tactile senses so that you don’t feel that you’re missing out. Sparkling waters, while sometimes higher in sodium, are typically rich in bicarbonate,  helping to balance any negative effects sodium may have in the body.

Healthy fruit or veggie juices add your color and flavor. Remember that juices tend to pack in some calories, so go light if you are watching your intake.  Instead, a simple squeeze of lemon or lime can serve the flavor category. Garnish is what “transforms” your simple drink to something more festive (lime/mint/jalapeno/olive).

Finally, think of how much better you feel in a pair of fancy shoes.  A martini/champagne or wine glass glass will provide the costume for your healthy hydration concoctions.

The next morning, while the partiers suffered their hangover, I had a personal best run. Self-respect enhanced… yay for me.
