Determination 2016

In a fitness sense, DETERMINATION helps us finish the set, the workout…and cross that finish line in our head. DETERMINATION is also necessary to follow the lifestyle we attest to whenever we are feeling physically, emotionally, or spiritually weak.

Fitness is an important practice field for life because, while we can usually predict and plan for our DETERMINATION in a fitness sense, we can’t as regularly predict when we’ll need DETERMINATION in a life sense. In real life, we draw on the attributes of DETERMINATION cultivated in our fitness practice.

DETERMINATION is critical to willPower when the odds are stacked against us. Whether we are trailing in the fourth quarter of the football game or the proverbial fourth quarter of an illness, our DETERMINATION keeps us “in the game” with the mindset of winning. Never flinching. Always believing.

So, I asked my husband, the former college quarterback and personal trainer, what DETERMINATION means to him now…in the realm of his current match with cancer.

He says…

Plenty of people are “determined” to get in shape, especially this time of year. If you have DETERMINATION, you can still fail for reasons of lack: lack of plan, lack of knowledge, lack of support, lack of focus, lack of fuel, lack of awareness, lack of confidence…and, seemingly, a lack of willPower. People with weak self-determination, though, can be strengthened with the right support system.

She says…

This is why group fitness can be the missing link. But, it must pass the muster of fun and effective. Fun won’t do it alone, and effective will not either. We need both to fuel our DETERMINATION.

He says…

DETERMINATION often entails the letting go of previous or conflicting goals. All of the DETERMINATION in the world will not help you achieve a goal that is unrealistic. Take, for example, losing more than 10 lbs in a week. Achieving this short-term weight loss will always backfire in the long-run in the form of damaged metabolism and rebound weight.

She says…

DETERMINATION is staying away from the negative influences to your goals. DETERMINATION is putting on the blinders in the face of fear, what-is, outside noise, others’ opinions, or nay-saying. With DETERMINATION, we resist the temptation to succumb or to stay small.  We understand it’s not selfish to create with DETERMINATION; it’s soul-serving to the world.

He says…

DETERMINATION is understanding and resolving lack of support issues. Lack of support…even from your most loved ones can be an issue. Men would tell him not to get their wives “fitness model” hot. Too hot. Heaven forbid…the light would shine on them.

His & Hers DETERMINATION Strengtheners

1. Asking questions, raising your hand, doing something gutsy
2. Mentors, coaches, a solid support circle
3. Trailblazing your own path
4. Going even when you don’t feel like it…and feeling the responsibility to
5. Never accepting the possibility of loss while you’re “in the game”
6. Eating and training a certain way so your physical determination can keep up with your mental determination
7. Allowing your best vision of yourself to dominate

He says…DETERMINATION is fueled from within. She says…DETERMINATION is the willPower to accomplish the goals you have set for yourself. Either way, DETERMINATION is vital to your willPower.
